Breaking the Cycle of Constant Consumption
By now you have probably heard of the phrase, slow fashion. It is the antithesis of fast fashion, or garments that are created quickly, in unethical factories, and sold for extremely cheap prices. While it may be tempting to make a few purchases from these fast-fashion retailers – after all your dollar stretches really far with these companies – in the long run, making these purchases can actually cost you more as well as harming the environment.
Oftentimes, these clothes are made so quickly, under such poor conditions, and with such cheap materials that they really don’t last very long. After just one or two wears, it wouldn’t be surprising if you noticed a hole or a tear or a ripped seam. This results in consumers simply resolving to throw away their clothes because there is no use in donating clothes that can no longer be worn.
However, throwing clothes away is extremely detrimental to the environment. When textiles, especially cheap ones, end up in the landfill, microplastics can flake off of these fabrics and end up in our environment and waterways. Fish and other animals have been found with microplastics in their organs, and that can end up on our plates. (If you eat meat, that is!) This is not healthy for anyone. The way to remedy this is by looking at the start of this cycle. This is why as consumers, we hold so much power. By making more informed choices, we can do our part to keep our textiles out of landfills and advocate for healthier supply chain practices.
That is why we are turning our attention to being a better steward of our environment, with a focus on sustainable practices and enduring style that breaks the cycle of constant consumption. Our mindfully made fashion line disrupts the practice of consuming and disposing of fast fashion.
Our Conscious Production Practices
No matter what your style is, it is important to consider how the products you are consuming are made. We are passionate about setting a good example for other fashion brands (and consumers too) by employing environmentally-friendly production practices from conception to crafting and delivering to you. By creating timeless designs, minimizing production waste, and using safe dyes, digital printing, and recycled yarns, we are doing our part in creating a better fashion industry.
- Fully Fashioned Knitting- We utilize a fully fashioned knitting process. This process cuts down on wasted fabric and creates a more durable garment. For each garment, the pattern pieces are all knit individually according to their precise shapes, leaving little to no wasted leftover materials. This also results in beautifully fit pieces with finished edges that won't fray, stretch, or warp over time.
- Bluesign Certified Dyeing- By employing Bluesign® certified dyeing techniques, we are using cleaner, safer dyes and using less water and energy than traditional dyeing methods. This is all in an effort to ensure our fabrics are safe for workers, customers, and the environment.
- Hand Crafted Digital Prints- In addition to our other green practices, our commitment to being environmentally-minded also continues into our printing process. We have a made-to-order digital printing process for many of our beloved seasonal patterned woven items. This allows us to craft small, exclusive batches of fabric to suit our exact production needs, resulting in significantly less fabric waste. This process also uses much less water than ordinary wet printing practices and results in more intricate and vivid designs.
- Recycled Yarns- The US Environmental Protection Agency reports that over 16 million tons of textile waste is created each year in the US alone. This shocking statistic has inspired us to create a recycled knits collection in order to do our part in combating this wastefulness. That is why we are proud to be able to give new life to pre-loved materials. We hope that you will find the beauty in these unique pieces and love them as much as we do!
Mindfully Made, Just for You
We are passionate about sustainability and living as eco-friendly as possible. However, we believe that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice enjoying life’s simple pleasures in an effort to be green. The popular saying is true: We don’t need a handful of people practicing perfect zero-waste living, we need a lot of people doing sustainability imperfectly. This is what is going to create real change. So we would love to know, in what ways are you incorporating thoughtfulness and sustainability in your life? Did you recently start composting at home? Have you been making plastic-free swaps? Or maybe, you’ve just committed to reducing your food waste by meal planning more frequently. Whatever the case may be, we would love to share ideas and hear what is working for you. Feel free to join the conversation on social media! Or, if you have any questions or feedback for us regarding our products or our sustainable practices, don’t hesitate to reach out by contacting us on our website. We look forward to hearing from you!
